Smoking is considered a risk factor for many oral and systemic diseases, which cause a number of problems in the health of the individual. What denotes the influence of smoking on periodontal diseases is the destruction of tissues, these tissues were analyzed in the course of this work through the literature review, which covered the etiology of periodontal disease and how smoking has influenced the progression of the disease, as well as tissue recovery during and after periodontal therapy, both in Smokers, non-smokers, and others who ceased with habit during longitudinal studies. It is extremely important for both the professional and the population to know the harmful effects of tobacco on oral and systemic health, in this way the professional will perform a treatment with a better prognosis and as the patient, through the information, will understand that better results will be noticed with the discontinuation of cigarette use.
