Resumo
Private Natural Heritage Reserves (RPPNs) are the only category of official Conservation Unit whose owner is not the government, but the private sector. This fact demonstrates a great potential for the private sector to be increasingly participative in the preservation, protection and recovery of Brazilian biomes. The objective of this study was to understand the characteristics and legal aspects of the RPPNs, all the steps to be followed for their registration, as well as to analyze the economic viability of the RPPNs located in the state of São Paulo. For a better understanding of this subject, the scope of this study was to collect data on specific legislation for RPPNs in the state of São Paulo, regardless of the application of such laws. A survey of statistical data was carried out on the RPPNs of the state of São Paulo, as well as on their tax benefits and incentives. As an integral part of the literature review, a complete description of the steps to be followed for the registration of an RPPN was made. Finally, a survey was carried out through a questionnaire, for a sample of 25 RPPNs, in order to obtain data on the current reality of the RPPNs in the state of São Paulo. It was concluded that the main motivation for the creation of the RPPNs was the awareness of biodiversity preservation. It was observed that RPPNs generate costs and some of them generate insufficient revenues, therefore, the economic feasibility study does not apply to the studied RPPNs.
