Resumo
The need to treat the aquaculture effluent aims to meet the requirements of the new
legislation and the pressure from environmental agencies and society itself. Studies
that address the preservation of the environment and confront economic indicators are
fundamental for the success of the activity, since they are indispensable items for
aquaculture sustainability. The objective of this work was to apply different economic
indicators as a tool to assess the feasibility of implementing artificial floating island
systems (IFAs), used to minimize the environmental impacts caused by the discharge
of fish farming effluents. The experiment was carried out in two systems (with and
without IFAs, in triplicates) along a semi-intensive production cycle of Nile tilapia. The
average values of the production cost and the following economic indicators were
calculated regarding the conduct of the production cycle per hectare of water mirror:
net financial revenue, profitability index, internal rate of return and net present value.
Feed costs were the main parameter that affected production costs, 63.10% for IFAs
and 60.12% for without IFAs. The implementation of the structures increased
production costs by 4.73%. The study showed that the economic profitability was
positive for both production systems. The results found in this study show that the
structures of IFAs are tools aimed at the sustainability of fish farming ponds, with lowcost investments and maintenance and that seek adaptation to environmental laws,
meeting the needs of small and medium rural producers.
