The quest for beauty dates to ancient times and today, more and more women and
men are in an unbridled quest to present a more youthful appearance. Therefore,
several aesthetic procedures have been suggested to reduce the signs of aging,
enhancing the patient's beauty. Due to people's greater interest in these procedures,
scientific industries have innovated and launched more new products on the market.
The most popular area is the face. One of the most sought-after areas is the face and,
among the available procedures, the application of hyaluronic acid and botulinum toxin
stands out. According to the literature, there are several clinical cases with positive
results, but this Literary Review aims to expose possible trans and postoperative
complications of these procedures in the orofacial region, gathering information and
complications from articles already published on these complications, highlighting It is
important that the dentist knows the muscles of the face to carry out the application
correctly. To this end, a careful search was carried out on digital platforms: Pudmed,
SCielo, and VHL, using the keywords: hyaluronic acid, botulinum toxin, and
complications. 83 articles were found in English and Portuguese and 10 that were of
interest for the study were selected. Most clinical cases of filling with hyaluronic acid
range from the formation of nodules, which can be easily resolved, to tissue necrosis,
depending on the region. Regarding the application of botulinum toxin, cases present
excessive paralysis in some regions, bilateral asymmetry, and tissue necrosis. Many
people seek these treatments without knowing the risks and complications. The dentist
must provide guidance and follow care protocols to avoid them.
