Abstract

This study examined the prevalence of bovine cysticercosis in 9,360,447 cattle slaughtered under Federal Inspection Service (SIF) in Rondônia state, Brazil, from 2021 to 2024, using official data from the SIGSIF-MAPA system. It consisted of an epidemiological, observational, retrospective, quantitative time-series study. A total of 735 positive cases were recorded, yielding an overall prevalence of 0.0186 % (95 % CI 0.017–0.020 %), 48 times lower than the consolidated national average (0.90 %). Year 2022 showed a well-defined epidemic peak (0.463 % in March), followed by a sustained 82 % reduction to December/2024 (0.084 %), with a highly significant linear trend (Mann-Kendall τ = -0.68; p < 0.0001). Logistic regression identified March as the highest-risk month (OR = 2.31; p < 0.0001). Total condemnation (DS1) predominated (71.2 % of cases), with 86.5 % of cysticerci concentrated in only three slaughterhouses of FIS and 83,8 % in nine preferential anatomical sites (carcass 21.22%, head 8.98%, heart 8.84%, liver 8.03%, tongue 7.89%, stomach 7.35%, spleen 7.21%, intestine 7.21% and lung 7.07%). Total economic impact reached R$ 2.53 million (average R$ 3,441/positive animal), with 93.1 % of losses in three plants. Corrective measures implemented from May/2022 generated real savings of R$ 625,231 in 2023-2024. It is concluded that Rondônia achieved full sanitary control of bovine cysticercosis, reversing a documented outbreak in less than 36 months and establishing itself as a national benchmark, with a replicable focused-control model to meet the MAPA target of prevalence < 0.1 % by 2030.
