Abstract

The study evaluated a 1-monoglycerides of organic acids blend in the diet of broilers challenged with Eimeria spp. and Clostridium perfringens, is capable of replacing enramycin and ensuring positive results on performance, intestinal health, and immune response. A total of 1,408 Cobb 500 chicks were reared from 1 to 42 days of age in a completely randomized design 4 x 2 factorial design with four treatments: control diet (CD), CD + 750g of blend/ton of feed, CD + 1,000g of blend/ton, and CD + enramycin (10 ppm in the initial and growth phases and 5 ppm in the final phase, without organic acid) and two groups of broilers: without challenged or challenged with Eimeria spp and Clostridium perfringens. On the third day, the challenged birds received a live Eimeria vaccine at 20 times the recommended dose. On days 10, 11, and 12, a pathogenic strain of Clostridium perfringens type A was administered via gavage, at a concentration of 1 x 10^8 CFU per bird/day. The performance characteristics of the pre-starter (1 to 7 days of age), initial (8 to 14 days of age), growth I (15 to 21 days of age), growth II (22 to 35 days of age) and final (36 to 42 days of age) phases were evaluated. On day 21, eight birds per treatment were selected for interleukin-6 (IL-6) analyses and slaughtered for evaluation of ileal integrity for I see Inside (ISI) index. The performance data were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) using the General Linear Model (GLM) procedure of SAS®. Upon significance, the means of the challenge factor were compared by the F test and of the diet by the Tukey test, at a probability of 5%. The data for the I See Inside (ISI) and for the IL-6 concentration were initially subjected to the Kruskal-Wallis test (PROC N1parway) and if there was an effect (P<0.05), the means were compared by the Dunn test of SAS®. The challenged birds showed greater weight gain, feed consumption and feed conversion in all evaluated phases (P<0.05), however, the diets showed no significant effect on performance (P>0.05). Challenged birds had a reduced ISI index (P<0.0001), regardless of diet. However, challenged birds that received CD + 750g of blend/ton of diet had lower IL-6 concentration (P<0.05) compared to the CD group, similar to birds that received CD + 1,000g of blend/ton of diet and enramycin. It was concluded that, although the diets did not mitigate the impact of the challenge on performance and ISI, the 1-monoglycerides of organic acids blend and enramycin reduced IL-6 in challenged birds.
